took a walk…

September 30, 2009

this weekend we took a little walk around our neighborhood and i snapped some of my boys. my three-year-old has ZERO patience for the camera, so all i get of him lately are silly faces or blurry ones because he is running away. oh, and i’m also privileged to get to photograph the back of his head. i’m so lucky. :)

since i live in southern california and it’s a million degrees all year round, i was so glad to have it actually cool down a little while we were out. and by cool down a little, i mean it was about 75 degrees instead of 90. yee-haw!

luckily it’s been nice since last night, but we’ve been informed it’s not sticking around. i swear, i’m about to pack up the kids and move to colorado! then at least i’d get some semblance of fall and some crispness in the air.

but i digress….

here are some fun ones to share:

hope you all enjoy your wednesday! i’ll be off on a road trip with my boys this weekend to visit the great state of utah and hopefully soak up as much FALL weather as i can handle. wish me luck with 2 little ones and a 10-hour drive! :)

in the church that i belong to, we have men and women called missionaries who take 2 years out of their lives to serve a mission for our church in some part of the world. that means that where we live, we have missionaries assigned to our area. we like to have them over for dinner as a service as well as a fun time to get to know them while they’re stationed here.

these two elders (that’s what they are called) are such great guys to be around. and since they were over at our house for dinner one night, they saw my lighting equipment and asked if i take pictures. yep! was my reply, and they asked if i’d take a couple of them. and i do mean a couple, we had a mini-session that lasted all of 8 minutes. :)

here are a couple from that session. again, it’s nothing major, we didn’t even use a backdrop, just the wall of my front room. :) but it was fun to play around a little bit.

i will be having a couple of great sessions coming up soon, so stay tuned for those!

*typing from my husband’s computer, a pc of course*

well, this week has been interesting. my mac is in the shop because it was freaking out and not working properly. they’re replacing the entire motherboard. ugh.

so needless to say, i haven’t been able to work on the things i was going to work on and post here, which is a huge bummer.

what have i learned? that i will not promise things on my blog, even if i think i can deliver them. :) because i hate having that feeling that i’m not doing getting it all done. and yes, this time it’s because of things beyond my control, but i suppose i worry about what you (my loyal blog readers and first-time readers alike) will think about me.

SO, i’m going to hit this blog up with some new stuff as soon as my machine is back home and running smoothly. it may be a few days, it may be a week. i’m not promising anything. :) in the meantime, here is at least one photo from the upcoming renee + lewis couple shots. i really had a great time working with them and they were tons of fun! i just hope i can get my computer back soon so that i can share the rest with you. because i really love to share! (wish my 3-year-old would grasp the concept!)

i am alive, i promise

September 6, 2009

i know, not blogging for almost 3 weeks is basically a major sin. i apologize. it’s just that lately i haven’t had much by way of client proofing or interesting photography to share. i’m sure it has a lot to do with the fact that i seriously hosed my nikon 18-70mm lens, as it was my main workhorse. just another reason to ‘invest’ in a newer, better version of it, right dear? ::hint hint::

so yes, things have been crazy and non-photographic and basically all-around boring here. sorry to disappoint. but i will be doing better this week, as i have some fun things to share and i’m going to try and take some fun, artistic shots to share just because i can. promise.

on that note, is there anything that you’d particularly like to see here on ye ole blog? i know that most people enjoy seeing the sneak peeks of sessions and such, and those i will always add. but what about other stuff? do you want to see pictures of my kids? is that too ‘mommy blogger’ for you? (i have to confess that sometimes it is for me. i don’t want to be that [not that there's anything wrong with that], i just want this to be more along the artistic, professional side of things.)  so let me know if there’s anything you want to see more of or things that you can do without. i just want to make this blog a place that you like to come to for cool photos, maybe a little inspiration, and a big dollop of happy.

until we meet again!

my wonderful sister in law renee got married this past weekend to a great guy named lewis. it was such a beautiful ceremony and i was so glad to be able to witness it. and not only that, i got to photograph it as well! i had the most fun time! i love photographing weddings. :)

and i’m going to warn you, this will be a very long sneak peek, as renee is family and i want everyone to be able to see LOTS of shots. (of course, it’s just a smattering of the over 2200 that i shot, so there are more to see, renee!) hope you enjoy!

ever since i started working on this blog, i have had the idea to do a fun giveaway here that really means a lot to me. let me explain.

i have been taking photographs almost my entire life, with a much more focused study of it just in the last few years. i’ve been blessed with some really generous family members, which have given me the opportunity to own some great equipment, and i’m constantly trying to learn as much as i can about the various items i have.

but in all the effort that i had been putting into learning more about photography, there seemed to be something that i just wasn’t able to grasp. i felt comfortable using my camera, i knew where most of the buttons and things were, but i just couldn’t wrap my head around shooting in manual and getting the right exposure for each photo in order to make it turn out the way i wanted. don’t get me wrong, i did take some amazing shots — but i had no idea what to do to replicate them a second time.

then came my birthday this year — my photographer sister gave me a book that i had been gravitating towards for a few months, but just hadn’t had the opportunity to purchase yet. little did i know what this gift would do for me. the book is called ‘understanding exposure‘ by bryan peterson.

let me tell you, this book changed my photographic life. while reading through it, every piece of the puzzle that i had been chasing around and trying to force into this big picture finally fell effortlessly into place and it all made sense. i can’t tell you how grateful i am to mr. peterson for writing such an easy-to-understand guide that helped me immensely. not to mention my great sister for giving it to me. thanks em!

so, to celebrate this new adventure that i’m taking, and this new blog, i’m going to give away two copies of this book to two lucky readers of this little ol’ blog. and trust me, you have a very good chance if you’re reading this right now because it’s so new! :)

here’s how to enter:

you can earn one entry for either commenting on this post, following me on twitter (@laurellakeypics), re-tweeting this giveaway, blogging about this giveaway, or posting about it on facebook. for each action, comment here and link to your post or facebook link, etc., and you will be entered once for the giveaway. please make sure that you enter your email address when you comment so that i can notify you that you have won.

all entries need to be received by midnight PST, august 24th. once the entries are all received, i will randomly select the 2 winners and promptly send you your prize.

so please, tell everyone you know who is interested in improving their photography skills, that this is the contest for them!

good luck, i can’t wait to see who wins! ttfn!

traveling

in the last few weeks, while i’ve been hard at work preparing this blog, i have spent quite a bit of time going through my photo archives looking for pictures to use on the site and such. little did i know that i was embarking on a trip — but instead of traveling through space, i was traveling through time. i don’t often go through older photos just for the purpose of reminiscing, but when i do, i always feel a little more nostalgic. kind of sad because i know these moments have passed and will never happen again. but also so happy that i was able to capture these moments in time, on film (or digital card, whatev) and now am able to really take time and pore over them. because heaven knows when you’re in the midst of raising young kids, you don’t have time to pore over much!

and it’s also so fun to see how much my kids have already grown. here are some older photos of my now-3-year-old big boy. he used to be a cute little chunk of a baby!

Eli push toy

don’t you just want to reach out and pinch those adorable cheeks? i know i do. he was just over a year old in this picture, still mastering the whole walking thing with his little push toy. he loved that thing. we’ll have to get it out here in a couple of months when little brother starts to walk on his own.

oh my goodness, he was such a little cutie. and here he is today:

things just move along and i’m doing my best to keep up.

anyone have any suggestions (besides taking thousands of photos) to save these memories?
